Expansion: Chicken Teriyaki/McDonalds bonus

Big Mac y'all! If you thought we were going to McDonalds and not buying their signature sandwich then you are crazy. Combining American and (American-)Chinese food in an attempt to unify our (American) cultures. This sandwich was all about bringing us closer to world peace.

The first step was to take the top patty and toppings and in a gracious manner move it to the bottom to make way for our Chinese brothers to have equal space and opportunity to make this sandwich delicious.

After setting up the chicken and rice in their new high-rise home we sealed it with a kiss, cut it in half, and began devouring our boundaryless burger hopeful that our actions would bring about a new era of racial equality.

                                                                      Verdicts:

-Kevin-
Thumbs down. No world peace today and no amount of manipulation can save this idea. It was like Josh's but thicker so you had to roll it around in your mouth more. It was just.... Blegh. As a final note McD fries, rice, and chicken is also non too tasty.

-Josh-
The Big Mac was more or less like mine, just with shredded lettuce. The whole made it more waterlogged and generally bland. I would not recommend the Big Mac

Expansion: Chicken Teriyaki/McDonalds part 2

Sarku Japan: Chicken Teriyaki - Double Meat - $6.48
McDonalds: Chicken and Bacon Wrap - $2.99

-Asian Taco-

The tortilla for McDonalds new premium wraps is quite tasty, but like most wraps, it is pretty empty inside. What they do put inside, however, is rather tasty. I first removed half the McDonalds chicken and filled it with rice, teriyaki chicken, cabbage, carrots, and broccoli. With so many ingredients my wrap evolved into something more like a burrito.

Long story short; it was super tasty. I could see this as a regular menu item at any store that sells wraps. The McDonalds wrap contained breaded chicken, spinach, lettuce tomato, and a tiny piece of bacon all of which went well with the teriyaki chicken, but I think any tortilla item would have been delicious. Even just buying some tortillas and lettuce and making an asian taco at home sounds tasty. One thing to note is that after the McyD's chicken had been sitting out for tenish minutes it became much (like super a lot) less tasty.

Verdict: Big thumbs up on the Asian Taco. I would definitely recommend it if your mall contains an Asian place and either McDonalds, Chik-fil-A or Taco Bell. Definitely secret menu material.

-Josh-
Kevin's food was an interesting idea. The bacon from the wrap was really good. The same problem came about with the rice. It was too watery and made everything taste a bit bland. His combo really accentuated the teriyaki though. It was far tastier than mine.

Expansion: Chicken Teriyaki/Mcdonalds Part 1

Josh here, Today we were expanding on a common meal, Chicken Teriyaki, with a menu item of choice from Mcdonalds. One thing we did learn from this experiment was, if you let Mcdonalds food get cold, it turns into a terrible mess. Here's the list:

Mcdonalds: #2 Combo, 2 cheeseburgers, fries, and drink. Large Sized - $4.89
Sarku Japan: Chicken Teriyaki - Double Meat - $6.48

-Chicken Teriyaki Burger-

I started with the cheeseburger, added a layer of rice, chicken, and vegetables. I also put a small layer of fries on top. It's pretty easy and a little boring, but it worked. At first bite the food didn't mesh well together, and the cheese wasn't noticeable. The second bite changed everything. The teriyaki sauce, and the cheese combined in a way that I wouldn't have though. The saltiness of the cheese and the sweetness of the teriyaki was a nice flavor, but after that everything went wrong. I couldn't taste the sauce anymore and the water from the rice made everything taste a little bland and waterlogged. The fries, however, added a nice texture that I wouldn't have thought originally. Since Mcdonalds fries are pretty tasty on their own, this is an obvious conclusion to come. The pickles also added a nice saltiness that wasn't accentuated otherwise. I think salt and pickling adds a nice flavor to the burger.

Verdict: Bland, the water from the rice ruined the entire meal, making it a bland mess. I would recommend just adding the chicken teriyaki and some of the vegetables, which included onions and fried lettuce, with a little extra teriyaki sauce.

 -Kevin-
Ugh. Something about putting a teriyaki chicken platter on the burger made my stomach revolt. I don't know if it was the meat or what but it's definitely not good. The pickles were especially gross when combined with teriyaki. I wouldn't try it again. (Josh) (Keep in mind Kevin hates pickles on a burger, so his opinion is null and void on that subject. Also most sauces on a burger turn him off as well, so it's weird to eat with him sometimes)

Verdict: Thumbs down. Try it just to see how gross it can be.

Any suggestions?

Josh here, just wanting to add, if you have any suggestions for food challenges as listed in the first post, leave a comment. We have a few ideas getting started, but could always use more. We'll put your username in future posts if we use your suggestion, so don't be afraid, unless you don't want us too. Just remember that we are located in the South with a limited number of choices, so we won't be able to do everything that you can suggest. For example, the nearest Jack in the Box is about 200 miles away for us. But, if it's in the Knoxville, Tennessee area you can bet we'll try it, and combine it with another restaurant.

Restaurant: Subway/Captain D's part 2

Subway: 6 in Buffalo Chicken on wheat - $4.50
    tomato, lettuce, cucumber
Captain D's: Southern Style Fish meal - $4.99
    fries, hushpuppies

-Southern Surf and Turf Sandwich-

-Kevin-
When thinking about this challenge, I knew I wanted Buffalo chicken and something. Having never been to Captain D's before, I could only imagine what would be my second item. Going with the Southern Style Fish meal was a good choice.

The manly combining style used in this dish was splitting the fish down the middle, cutting the hushpuppies into thirds and putting it on top of the buffalo chicken. A simple combination, but tasty nonetheless. However, this did make the sandwich hard to hold and it did fall apart right at the end. The taste of the sandwich as a whole was better then the individual meals. The unbreaded chicken combined with the over-breaded fish helped balance out the flavor and enhance the natural taste of both. As well, The buffalo sauce from Subway complimented the southern style breading. The hush puppies added more breading and couldn't really be tasted. If I made the sandwich again, I would leave them off. I used only a few toppings to make sure I could taste the flavor of the meats. Some toppings I would recommend would be onion, tartar sauce, or ranch dressing.

A final note to this meal is that at Captain D's they give you enough fish for a footlong, but it's so massive a 6 inch sub will be all you want. If you want to try this meal I'd recommend going with a friend and since you get two sides at Capy D's, each person can pick their favorite.

Judgement: Thumbs up
I would get this sandwich again, just maybe not on whole wheat and with more toppings. Definitely worth a try and affordable if you split this with one other person.

-Josh-
Kevin's food was good. The fish combined with the buffalo sauce made for a good combination. As subway chicken is, I could have done without it. If subway offered a fried fish with buffalo sauce sandwich. I would try it once, realize subway makes terrible fish, and never again. I think his sandwich could have used something more though, a sauce of some sort, other than just the buffalo, maybe Ranch or Tartar Sauce?

Judgement: It was a good food combination, I just thought it could have a little bit more.

Restaurant: Subway/Captain D's part 1

Subway: Spicy Italian sandwich with onions, provolone cheese, lettuce, and mustard. Also a broccoli and cheese soup - $6.50
Captain D's: Fish tenders with butterfly shrimp, fried okra, french fries, and hush puppies - $4.99

-Josh-
A sandwich. I placed the fish and and shrimp in between the pepperoni and salami, cut up a
hush puppy and added a few fries in for good measure. I also added a layer of tartar sauce. For the soup I just added some of the okra and cut up some fries and put them in there.

The sandwich, at first, was overpowered by the fish. As time went on the pepperoni and salami became a larger factor and added a nice spiciness that was a decent flavor for what I was eating. The shrimp was unnoticeable. So were the hush puppies, although they did add a nice texture that usually isn't there for a subway sandwich. the mustard was overpowering, and didn't add anything to the experience other than the taste of mustard, plus the guy who made the sandwich really piled it on. The soup was bland and watery from the get go. I was expecting them to have a wider selection, but broccoli and cheese was the only choice. The okra added into it was really good, with the soup acting as more of a dipping sauce then an actual food. The french fries went unnoticed until all the okra was gone, but the saltiness and the way Captain D's fries are fried made a really interesting combination that greatly enhanced the flavor of the soup when cornered. If I did the soup again, I would have gotten the steamed broccoli at Captain D's instead of the okra to add more substance, since there was any broccoli in the soup to begin with.

Judgement: Good Job. I enjoyed the meal. If I had to do it again, I would get less mustard. Also, fewer veggies, since the sandwich was so big I could barely fit it in my mouth. For the soup, it was alright, but some salt and pepper would have gone a long way to enhance the flavor. (I just forgot to grab some packets of them while I was in the restaurant.)

-Kevin-

I am not a fan of mustard or tartar sauce, both of which Josh's sandwich had plenty of. Therefore, I only took  a few bites. One thing I will say is that the spices on the pepperoni and salami made the fish really tasty. The Shrimp he put on was overpowered by the meats and sauces, and I couldn't really taste it.
The broccoli cheddar soup with french fries and fried okra was a great idea, but the soup was too bland for it to be best experienced. With better soup I would definitely recommend this combination.

Judgement: Thumbs up on the sandwich. Total thumbs up on the soup if it were from a place that specialized in soup.

Super Manly Combining Food Blog

Like fast food? Like secret menus? How about combining food to make awesome new recipes? If your answer was yes to any of those then welcome to our blog! The purpose of this blog is for the writers, Josh and Kevin, to use the power of our imaginations and our resilient stomachs to combine different food from different fast food restaurants into super manly dishes. (Get the name now?) We have a few different ways to go about this:

1. Restaurant Challenge: The only thing predetermined is the two venues. What we buy and what we do with them is completely up in the air. However, we will try to stick to one main dish and just a few side dishes. The purpose of this is to make delicious secret menu items and pass them along.

2. Food Challenge: We start with two identical menu items bought at the same place and challenge each other to find the most delicious and unique way to combine them. In this challenge we will decide a winner between the two of this.

3. Expansion Challenge: We both start with the same menu item from the same fast food place and then buy a second menu item from any different restaurant to combine in the most delicious and unique way to determine a winner and hopefully a tasty new meal for you.

Get it? Got it? Good. Let's begin.
